ThereGoesJohn.com lives on today as an online record of one of the coolest things I've ever done: backpack across Central and South America, then with my brother across Africa from Cape Town to Cairo. You can find journals and photos, as well as the adventure's backstory on the links to the left.

This site was young, once. As I coded it in 2002, it represented all the promise, excitement and doubts of the adventure I was about to embark on. During 18 months of updating from the road, it was my companion, my voice to share my trip with folks back home. Now it's getting, and looking, a bit tired.

Cooler, splashier websites have long since made my first little online creation look plain and ordinary. It no longer represtents the promise of an adventure to come, but for me it's still home to precious memories. So here it will remain, all its web 1.0 glory, a record of a few moments in time I'll never forget.

I produced a photo montage of some of my favorite images from the trip and set it to the tune of Dolly Parton's "Travelin' Thru" from the soundtrack to the indie film Transamerica. Just hit the button on the player below and enjoy. Thanks for checking out the site.

And a video of my brother and me on a Mazda blogger junket in Monterey we were invited to as the creators of ThereGoesJohn.com. We shot this with a little Flip Video camera when they were first released and edited it in Windows Movie Maker on the flight home.
