Around the World in 80 Days Cincinnati, Ohio, USA
Tuesday August 13, 2002
I'd be remiss if I didn't post something on here today. It's 80 days till I'm gone from Cincinnati. Oddly enough, several people today asked me how much longer I would be at the station. I managed to work "around the world in 80 days" into every answer.
"All the things I had plenty of time to do" It's actually starting to become real. Not scary so much yet as overwhelming. All the things I thought I had plenty of time to do are getting bigger as the time to finish them gets smaller. The bigger things are...
Building my résumé website for when I get back
Putting together a resume tape while I still have access to the equipment at the station
Finishing off my last vaccines, Typhoid and Polio, and looking into getting a waiver for Cholera
Finding a bank with cheap overseas ATM fees
Figuring out how I'm gonna get to San Francisco when I start out
Deciding on and buying whatever additional gear I need.
Moving
All this while working right up till my very last day in Cincinnati. I plan literally to leave my apartment on the morning of November 1st in my moving van, drive to work, put in an eight hour day, and drive to my Mom's in Virginia. We'll see how much work I actually get done that day.
"They're All Gone But Me " When I do news promos, I get to announce a change in subject with a whoosh and cool animation. I wish there were a similar convention in writing.
It's funny sometimes what you find looking for something else. Today I found an old picture of some people I used to work with here in Cincinnati. It's attached to this entry. When it was taken, I never would have believed I'd be the last one besides my boss left one day. But they're all gone but me.
Whoosh
I'm getting close to finishing a new round of improvements to the web site. My development team is calling it version 1.1: The Freshening. I wanted to move some more links to content onto the homepage and add bullets for recent news. I think it looks ok. A little cluttered, but better than the static text that was there. By the time I leave, I suspect I'll have managed to clutter it up as badly as Yahoo has done with their site. (Have you seen Yahoo lately?)
Oh... and after much work and frustration, the ThereGoesJohn development labs have introduced entry comments. You can just click on either "Comments" or "Post a Comment" at the bottom of this entry to add a comment and see what anyone else might have said. Could be cool. Try it.
