I finally got my Mexico guidebook the other day. Funny that I've been reading guidebooks for two years now, but am just now getting around to buying the one for my first destination. It's a big change to be reading for real logistical information rather than entertainment. I keep coming back to the Tijuana section for the hotel and bus info, hoping to make those first few days a little less stressful.
I'm trying a new guidebook. I've been Lonely Planet all the way up till now, but I got the Mexico Rough Guide. It seems everyone swears by L.P., but the problem is everyone has it and ends up walking the Lonely Planet trail. The Rough Guide seems pretty good and maybe it's just different enough to give one the opportunity to find something slightly more out of the way. It doesn't have the same attitude as L.P., but that's OK, I guess.
"The buses just blow down the main highway." I'd been wavering from my plan of heading down the Baja Peninsula from Tijuana. Most of the books suggest it's pretty difficult if you don't have your own transportation. The buses just blow down the main highway, giving little opportunity to get off to the beaches. But a couple of people have told me it can be done, so why not. The worst that happens is you can't get a ride anywhere and have to wait for the next bus down the highway. Plus, I really wanna take the ferry from La Paz to either Los Mochis or Mazatlan. I think it's like 10 hours to Los Mochis if I try to get to the Copper Canyon or 18 hours to Mazatlan to continue south toward Mexico City. That'll be interesting.
I can see again. You may recall in a recent episode I drove my rental car over my glasses. Fortunately I don't really need them to survive. They just make everything prettier. But now I can sit unnoticed in the back at meetings again... very important.
"I had to have my own." I'm posting this entry in a whole new way. I'm just writing an email that I'll send to a special address at my site. The server then should be able to find it and plug it into my journal entries. I always wanted to write a script to do that, but never knew it was possible. Then I happened to see how someone else had done it the other day and had to have my own. I suppose it's possible I could find myself in a situation where I can send email but can't log on to the internet. Probably not, but I had fun setting it up anyway.
You may have noticed most of these entries are mercilessly boring. At first I thought it was because I live a boring life. While that may or may not be true, I think it's because I still haven't quite come around to the idea of putting every event and thought I experience on the internet. So some of the stuff that might actually be interesting I just blow right over thinking it's not right for a website.
But that'll all be academic in seven weeks. With luck I'll at least have some events other than work and planning to write about.|
