"New standards in pandering, idiot-targeted news."

Fox Sucks
Antigua, Sacatepequez, Guatemala
Monday February 24, 2003

I'll go ahead and warn you that this entry contains little or no travel narrative. I'm off tomorrow to the active volcano near Antigua, Pacaya. Then I'm kinda sitting around waiting for a package to arrive in Guatemala City. I'll have to look into what else I can do around here in the meantime. Today I recuperated from climbing Volcan Auga over the weekend, and the lack of sleep from a rather restless night at the top. I hear that may have been due to the altitude.

I never watched Fox News Channel at home. But it's on the cable at the hotel I'm staying at. There's CNN and BBC, too. But for some reason I find myself watching Fox. It really defines new standards in pandering, idiot-targeted news. Have you seen this guy Sheppard Smith?

"There had to have been a memo."
At some point somebody decided the American people no longer wanted objective journalism, preferring anchors and reporters who were as loud and obnoxious as the guests they invite on to yell at each other. Have you noticed how every on-air talent on the network says "our troops" and "our resolution?" There had to have been a memo that the idea of detachment no longer applies. I just feel sorry for the actual journalists who made the horrible decision to go work for this outfit. And let's not forget it's the most-watched cable news operation by a long shot. That's scary.

I was looking at job openings at television stations at home. I'm not sure why. But I came across one for a promotions manager at KPIX-TV in San Francisco with some stringent requirements. I kid you not.
