Blown Away Bloemfontein, Free State, South Africa
Wednesday July 16, 2003
Matt drove all the way into Blowme, as we've come to call it. And, refreshingly, we had no problem finding th hostel.
I failed to recount an interesting story from our drive out of Cape Town yesterday. There's a police roadblock on the road toward Beaufort West. We stop and I'm asked for some kind of license.
I assume he means my driver's license which I present without hiderance. He says "No. Your TV license." I explained I was not a South African citizen and as such didn't think I needed one.
He countered that since I was traveling in his country and watching South African TV, I was required to have a TV license and that the fine for not having one was 10,000 US Dollars.
At this point I'm reasonably sure he's messing with me, but I'm not sure so I try really hard to keep a straight face. He then indicates that if we're not able to pay the 10,000 US dollars in cash we're welcome to spend the night in jail.
Matt's turning white at this point and I'm still not entirely sure it's a joke. He asks which I choose... the $10,000 fine or a night in jail. I tell him I choose the night in jail.
He smiles a smile lacking a couple of teeth, thanks us for our time and waves us on.
