"I kept looking for the sink."

Kingdom in the Sky

Friday July 18, 2003

After two weeks of mostly posh accommodation in oceanside towns, we've entered a new phase in the African experience. Three of the next four days will be spent in rondavels (huts) or cell-sized rooms with no plumbing.

"A man-purse as it were."
Washing dishes in tubs on the floor last night, I kept looking for the sink. John and I are getting an inside look at life in Lesotho through my friend Siiri, a former coworker and current Peace Corps volunteer here. We'll be visiting several other towns where other volunteers live and work. Siiri's work is with Elelloang Basali Weavers, a cooperative of women who make and market mohair garments, blankets, and other accessories. We bought a bag, a man-purse as it were, and will be wearing it quite proudly, thank you.

After three more cold nights (yes, cold in Africa; all of Lesotho lies above ~7000 ft) in sleeping bags on the floor (possibly dirt), there will be much more to tell. We'll also have picked up a few more Sesotho... the Lesotho language... words by then.

Until then, tsala hantle... stay well.
